FREEROAM ("FREEROAM," "we," "us") is a driving app for car enthusiasts: discover great roads, navigate to them, record your drives, and meet up with other drivers. FREEROAM is operated by Kaizen Works LLC, a Colorado limited liability company. This policy explains what information the app collects, how we use it, and the choices you have. FREEROAM is an independent app and is not affiliated with any other company or service of a similar name.
We designed FREEROAM to be privacy-first: your recorded drives live on your device, and we collect only what the app's features actually need. FREEROAM is offered in the United States and Japan.
Information We Collect
Account information
- Email address and password — used to create and sign in to your account. Authentication is handled by Supabase; your password is transmitted encrypted and stored only in hashed form, so we cannot read it.
- Username — the public name shown to other users on events, shared roads, and cruises.
- Home city and state — optional, shown on your profile.
- Avatar photo — optional, if you choose to add one.
- Push notification token — if you allow notifications, a device token used to deliver them.
Location information
With your permission, FREEROAM uses your device's location (while the app is in use) to:
- Record your drives (GPS route, speed, and derived stats like G-force and elevation).
- Provide turn-by-turn navigation and show your position on the map.
- Sort nearby roads, tracks, and events by distance.
- Show local weather, weather radar, and posted speed limits.
- Share your live position with other participants only while you are in an active cruise you joined.
See "Location, in Detail" below for exactly where location data goes.
Content you create
- Community events — event details you publish (name, type, time, meeting location, description, images) and your RSVPs.
- Saved and custom roads/routes — roads you save or create, including their names and road geometry; custom roads you choose to share to the marketplace are visible to other users.
- Voice messages — when you use push-to-talk in a cruise and a live connection isn't available, short voice clips are sent so other cruise members can hear them. When possible these travel directly between nearby devices and never reach our servers; otherwise they are uploaded to our storage and automatically deleted on a rolling basis, typically within one hour and in all cases within 24 hours. Live push-to-talk audio is transmitted in real time and is not recorded by us.
- Images — avatar and event images you upload are stored in a storage bucket that is publicly readable by URL, so they can be displayed to other users.
Diagnostics and usage
- Drive event telemetry — the app sends us basic events (app start, drive start/end, navigation start/arrival, errors) along with your device platform, OS version, device model, and app version, so we can find bugs and understand feature usage. During a recorded drive this includes a periodic heartbeat (your current speed only, about once per minute — no location coordinates) used for reliability diagnostics.
- Performance monitor logs (optional, off by default) — if you enable the Performance Monitor in your Profile, the app samples device health (battery, thermal state, GPS tick rate, network activity, memory) to a local file on your device only. These logs contain no location coordinates or identifiers and are shared only if you export them yourself.
- Mapbox SDK telemetry — the map component collects anonymous usage data to improve Mapbox's maps. You can turn this off in About & Legal (see "Your Choices").
Device information
Platform (iOS/Android), OS version, device model, and app version, attached to diagnostics as described above.
We do not collect contacts, advertising identifiers, browsing history, or health data, and we do not sell your data or show ads.
How We Use Information
- Provide the app's core features: accounts, drive recording, navigation, weather, events, cruises, and voice chat.
- Show your username, avatar, events, and shared roads to other users where you've chosen to share them.
- Deliver push notifications you've allowed.
- Diagnose crashes and bugs, and understand which features are used.
- Protect the service, enforce our Terms of Service, and comply with law.
Sharing & Third-Party Processors
We share data only with the service providers needed to run the app:
- Supabase — our backend: authentication, database, file storage, and real-time messaging. Account data, content you create, cruise presence, and diagnostics are processed and stored here.
- Mapbox — maps, turn-by-turn routing, and snapping recorded routes to roads. Your coordinates are sent to Mapbox to compute routes and render maps. Mapbox also collects anonymous SDK telemetry, which you can disable in-app. Map data is © OpenStreetMap contributors.
- Agora — real-time voice for cruise push-to-talk. Your live audio is transmitted through Agora's network while you use the radio feature.
- Open-Meteo — weather forecasts and elevation data. Requests include coordinates only; no account or identifier is sent.
- Expo / EAS — push notification delivery and app build infrastructure. Your push token is processed by Expo's notification service.
- OpenStreetMap services — posted speed limits (Overpass API) and reverse geocoding of custom road locations (Nominatim) are looked up using coordinates only.
- Weather radar tile providers (e.g., RainViewer, Japan Meteorological Agency) — radar map tiles are fetched for the map area you're viewing.
Other users see what you share: your username and avatar; events you publish and RSVP to; roads you share to the marketplace; and, during a cruise, your live position and voice messages. We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect users and the service. We do not sell personal information.
International Users & Data Transfers
FREEROAM is operated from the United States, and the service providers listed above process data in the United States and other countries. If you use FREEROAM from Japan or anywhere else outside the United States, you understand and agree that your information is transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States, which may have data-protection rules different from those of your home country. By using the app, you consent to this cross-border transfer of your information.
Location, in Detail
- Recorded drives stay on your device. The full GPS trace of a drive (your route, speeds, G-force data) is stored locally and is not uploaded to our servers. It leaves your device only if you choose to share it (for example, a share card image or drive replay).
- Navigation and weather send your coordinates to the providers above (Mapbox, Open-Meteo, OpenStreetMap services) to compute routes and fetch local conditions — this is how any navigation app works.
- Cruises broadcast your live position (latitude, longitude, heading) to the other members of your cruise while it is active. Leaving the cruise stops the broadcast.
- Diagnostics do not include your location. The recording heartbeat reports only your speed, never coordinates.
- Location is used only while the app is in use; FREEROAM does not request background "always" location.
Data Retention & Deletion
- Account data and content you've created are kept while your account is active.
- Recorded drives, lap sessions, cars, and preferences are stored on your device and can be deleted in-app at any time (they are also removed if you delete the app).
- Cruise voice messages are short-lived operational files, deleted on a rolling basis (typically within one hour) and never kept as a permanent archive.
- Diagnostic events are retained for up to 12 months, then deleted or aggregated.
- You can delete your account from within the app (Profile → Delete Account). This deletes your account and the personal data associated with it from our active systems. We may retain limited records where required for legal compliance, safety, or fraud prevention (for example, moderation records), and residual copies in backups are purged on a rolling basis. Content you shared with others (such as an event others RSVP'd to) may remain visible in de-identified form or attributed to a deleted user.
- You can also contact us (below) to request deletion.
Children
FREEROAM is not directed at children. You must be at least 16 years old to create an account, and you must be a licensed driver (or a passenger) to use driving features. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 16; if you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
Your Privacy Rights
You may request to access, correct, or delete the personal information associated with your account, or to receive a copy of it in a portable format, by emailing privacy@freeroamdrive.com. We will verify your request using your account email and respond within 45 days. We do not sell or share your personal information for targeted advertising, and we will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights.
Do Not Track. The app does not track you across third-party apps or websites, and we do not respond to browser "Do Not Track" signals because we do not engage in the cross-site tracking they are designed to address.
Your Choices
- Location permission — the app requests location while in use; you can revoke it in system Settings (drive recording and navigation won't work without it).
- Notifications — allow or revoke push notifications in system Settings.
- Mapbox Telemetry — toggle anonymous map telemetry off in About & Legal.
- Voice Guidance — spoken navigation is off by default and toggleable in About & Legal.
- Performance Monitor — off by default; logs stay on your device unless you share them.
- Sharing — sharing drives, custom roads, events, and cruise location is always opt-in per feature.
- Account deletion — delete your account in-app at any time.
Security
Sessions are stored in your device's secure storage, traffic is encrypted in transit, and our database enforces row-level access controls so users can only access their own data (and data explicitly shared with them). No system is perfectly secure, but we design conservatively: data that doesn't need to leave your device doesn't.
Changes to This Policy
We'll update this page when our practices change and revise the "Last updated" date. Material changes will be highlighted in the app.
